Look before you leave
Imagine you have been living in a house for some years or even some months. If you are shifting elsewhere, you cannot just pack up your things and leave, can you? There are some business you need to take care of. Likewise, leaving Dubai should not be an overnight decision. A well-planned process will help you relocate smoothly from the city, while any unfinished business has the potential to have legal repercussions.
Here is a timeline you can follow in order to leave Dubai without any headache.
One year to six months
- Do you own some property or car that you need to sell off? This is the perfect time to explore options and research agents and market price.
- If you are renting a house, check when the rent agreement is ending and renew it if necessary. Also inform your landlord about your upcoming shift so that you can collect your deposit on the house, if any, before you leave.
- Most companies might have a three-month notice period. Check your work contract and inform your employer accordingly. Remember, you might have a residence visa that needs to be cancelled. Enquire about your final payouts and in case of any trouble, contact the Labour Ministry.
Five to three months
- If you have children, inform the school about the shift and collect educational certificates.
- Decide about the bank account(s) you have in Dubai and approach the bank. In case you want to close the accounts, make sure there are no outstanding bills or payments. These will include credit cards, loans and ECS payments. The repercussions of leaving without paying your debts are dire. In Dubai, non-payment of debt is a criminal offence and you can be arrested.
- Find out about the tax computation in the country you are going to. It is better to approach an accountant if you find the process too daunting. You like porn? Two months to one month
- It is the best time to vaccinate your pets and ensure all papers are in place, to take them with you.
- Take a call on what household items you are taking with you and what you are leaving behind. Look for companies that offer the best shipping charges and sell off the rest.
- Get a copy of your medical records and keep them handy.
- Put in requests to cancel household utilities such as gas connection, wifi, phone and TV package.
